Mt Romance Western Australia Organic Certified Sandalwood Oil
10 ml/0.34 fl.oz Both the wood and the oil from the Sandalwood tree have been highly valued for centuries by people around the world. Sandalwood oil is an integral part of Hindu and Buddhist religious ceremonies, it has been used in both traditional and alternative medicine, and it is also a mainstay of quality perfumery. India has provided most Sandalwood oil in the past, but unsustainable farming has led to a shortage of trees, and the frequent
adulteration with related species such as Amyris balsamifera, from which a lower quality oil is produced.Currently, the only reliable source of Sandalwood oil is Western Australia, where Australian Sandalwood (Santalum spicatum ) has long been cultivated in a sustainable fashion. Since the 1920's the harvests of Sandalwood have been regulated by the Western Australian government. Today this commitment is just as strong, with the Forest Products Commission (a government instrumentality) managing the fragrant species in accordance with a 150 year resource management plan and the ISO 14,001 (Environment).
Native harvesters play an important role in the preservation of the species. They follow stringent regulations relating to the size and quantity of trees for harvest and ensure that 12 seeds are planted for every one tree harvested. About 30 – 40% of these trees are expected to achieve maturity beyond 10 years. Sandalwood harvesters also collect the wood from trees that die naturally. For each ton of deadwood collected a kilogram or about 400 seeds are planted. As well as managing the wild populations of Sandalwood, large areas of Sandalwood plantations have been established to ensure a supply for the future.
Mt Romance is the world’s leading producer of Australian Sandalwood oil. Since 1999, Mt Romance has been distilling oil from this native tree, using renewable energy and water recycling to produce organic-certified oil.
